Why bird’s nest turns black? Can it be consumed after that?

A friend of mine told me that she has a box of bird’s nest which has turned black. This box of bird’s nest was stored in the refrigerator before and then it was taken out and kept in the cabinet. After putting in the cabinet for some time, it turned black completely.

The change of color is normally caused by fungus growing on the bird’s nest and it has become moldy. It may also be caused by other impurities or the nest might be fake. Hence, the bird’s nest is not safe for consumption.
